Basic Understanding of 2nd Day of Hajj – 9th of Zul-Hijjah

Do you know the basic details of the 2nd Day of Hajj – 9th Zul-Hijjah (The day of Arafat)?

1). Do you know there is no Hajj without Arafat?

When the Hajj pilgrims conclude their first day in Mina, the most important ritual of Hajj after this on the second day will be performed without which Hajj does not stand observed. According to one of the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), The Hajj is the day of Arafat.

2). When Hajj pilgrims should leave for Arafat from Mina?

On the day of Arafat, when the sunlight has spread a bit after sunrise, the Hajj pilgrims should leave for Arafat from Mina.

3). What is the place called Arafat and where it is located?

Arafat is a large open plain outside the precincts of Haram at a distance of nine miles from the blessed city of Makkah. Its boundaries are fixed and identified from all four sides and now the Saudi Government has erected landmarks on these boundaries so that Wuqoof-e-Arafat (stay at Arafat) which is the most important ritual of Hajj may not take place outside of the Arafat boundaries.

4). What is Masjid-e-Nimrah and its importance on the day of Arafat?

On the side from which the pilgrims enter Arafat, there is a large Mosque called Masjid-e-Nimrah which was founded by Sayyidna Ibrahim Khalilullah Alayhis Salaam. This Mosque is just at the edge of the open plain of Arafat. The piece of land beneath the western wall of this Mosque considered to be outside of Arafat boundary.

5). Don’t enter the area called Batn-e-Urana otherwise, Hajj shall stand null and void

The piece of land which is excluded from Arafat is called “Batn-e-Urana”. A stay here is not valid. Nowadays, it is seen that many tents are pitched right here in this part of the land which is called,

Batn-e-Urana”. If these people leave their tents during the time of Wuqoof and enter the boundary of Arafat, then their Hajj will be considered valid, otherwise Hajj shall stand null and void.

This must be understood very well. One must not merely rely on the statements of “Muallims” (pilgrim guides). One may stay wherever he may wish throughout the plain of Arafat but it is treated as preferable to stay near the Mount of Mercy (Jabal-e-Rahmat).

What is Wuqoof-e-Arafat (Stay in Arafat)?

 1). What is the meaning of Wuqoof?

The literal & linguistic meaning of Wuqoof is to stay or stand.

2). What is the time of stay in Arafat?

The stay at Arafat for a while any time after Zawaal (mid-day) on the 9th of Zul-Hijjah until dawn (on the 10th), is the most important pillar of Hajj, the stay at Arafat until sunset of the 9th is Wajib (obligatory).

3). When Sermon (Khutba) is offered in Masjid Nimrah & Which Prayers to offer on the day of Arafat?

The followings are the list of the activities involved till the offering of the prayers of Zuhr & Asr:

a). It is preferable (Mustahab) to take a bath before mid-day, but if there is no chance to do this then Wudu (making an ablution) would also suffice.

b). After making preparation in an above-mentioned manner one should go to Masjid Nimrah. Here, the leader of the Muslims or his deputy shall deliver the second sermon of Hajj.

REMEMBER!  Listening to the sermon of Hajj is an act of Sunnah and not Wajib. Most of the Hajj pilgrims make their lives difficult & try to get a place inside the Masjid Nimrah to listen to the Hajj sermon even after knowing that there is no sufficient accommodation. Considering that such listening of Hajj sermon is an act of Sunnah and Not obligatory (Fard), therefore they should not try such acts if finding the place in the Masjid Nimrah is not possible.

c). Thereafter the Hajj pilgrim will lead both Zuhr and Asr prayers during the time of Zuhr First he will lead the Zuhr prayer followed by the congregation for Asr prayer. Two Sunnah of Zuhr prayer shall be skipped in this way.

4). Zuhr and Asr prayers on the day of Arafat

It is an act of Sunnah to combine both Zuhr and Asr prayers during the time of Zuhr prayer in Arafat on the Day of Arafat. (Zubdah).

But the condition is that one is wearing the Ihraam of Hajj and praying under the leadership of the leader of the Muslims or his deputy. First, the Zuhr prayer will be offered followed by the offering of ASR prayer separately.

What is the Sunnah way of observing Wuqoof-e-Arafat?

1). What is the preferable place for Hajj pilgrims to stay in Arafat?

A pilgrim may stay anywhere he wishes in the entire plain of Arafat from mid-day until sunset; however, it is preferable to stay near the well-known hill of Arafat namely Jabal-e-Rahmat (Mount of Mercy).

2). Do you know what is Mount of Mercy (Jabal-e-Rahmat)?

The Mount of Mercy (Jabal-e-Rahmat) was the hill where the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) observed his Wuqoof.

3). What Hajj pilgrims can do if they cannot reach Mount of Mercy (Jabal-e-Rahmat)?

If someone is unable to reach this place then it is better to be as close to it as possible. But if it is difficult to approach near the Mount of Mercy (Jabal-e-Rahmat) or it is very difficult to relocate his own tent on return which happens nowadays quite commonly, the pilgrim should then observe his Wuqoof in his own tent.

4). What actually is achieved when we stay on the Mount of Mercy (Jabal-e-Rahmat)?

The essence here is to achieve the tranquility and humiliation of the heart and that can be achieved only when one’s heart is not attached to be belongings and relatives or companions behind.

REMEMBER! It is baseless to climb the Mount of Mercy (Jabal-e-Rahmat) as common people do so.

5). Do we need to stand or sit down while observing Wuqoof in Arafat?

It is most preferable to observe Wuqoof in a standing position facing Qiblah up to the time of sunset. If someone is unable to stand the whole time then one may stand for as long as one can then one may sit and when he regains his strength he should stand again. One should remain engaged with the recitation of Talbiya repeatedly with humiliation and concentration.

One should remain engaged in the remembrance of Allah, recitation of the Holy Quran, reciting Durood upon the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and Istighfar (seeking forgiveness from Allah). One should remain engaged in asking from Allah for the fulfillment of all worldly and spiritual needs for one’s own self, relatives, friends and for all the Muslim brothers.

6). Don’t waste the time on the day of Arafat, keep praying and asking help Allah

This is a special time for the acceptance of invocations and one is not fortunate to have this opportunity always. During this period of time, one should avoid indulgence even in permissible conversation unnecessarily. The whole time should be spent in the remembrance of Allah and invocations.

REMEMBER! After performing ASR no Sunnah or Nafl prayer is performed. (Zubdah)

The invocation (Dua) for Arafat

1). How to make supplication (Dua) during the stay in Arafat?

In the invocations of Wuqoof, it is desirable (Mustahab) to raise hands like in praying but on feeling tired one may invoke with their hands down and upon regaining strength one should lift their hands again. (Zubdah).

2). Sunnah supplication (Dua) in the light of Hadith

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) raised his hands and pronounced Allah o Akbar Walillahil Hamd three times and thereafter he said the following supplication.

There is no deity but Allah alone. He has no Partner. The whole universe is for Him and for Him is all Praise. O Allah, keep me on the guidance and purify me with piety and forgive in the Hereafter and this world.

The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) then let his hands down for as long as it takes for the recital of Surah Fatiha. Then again he raised his hands and repeated the same words and supplication. Thereafter he again let his hands down for same time equivalent to the recital of Surah Fatiha and again for the third time, he repeated the same words and supplication with raised hands.

3). What is the best supplication (Dua) in the light of Hadith?

The Messenger of Allah Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said: The best supplication on the Day of Arafat and the best of all the supplications I ever offered or other Messengers before me ever offered is:

There is no deity but Allah alone. He has no Partner. The whole universe is for Him alone and All praise; and He has power over everything.

4). Reward by Allah for those who make above supplication (Dua) in the light of Hadith

The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) said, “On the Day of Arafat, whichever Muslim will read this (aforementioned supplication) 100 times and Surah Ikhlaas 100 times and 100 time the following Durood upon The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H).

“O Allah let your Blessing come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, you are praiseworthy and Glorious. Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, you are praiseworthy and Glorious”.
Then Allah will address the angels ‘O My angels be My witness that I have forgiven this person and have accepted his intercession and if he had interceded on behalf of (all) the people of Arafat, I would have accepted it.’’(Durr-e-Manthoor)”.
And according to one narration the third Kalimah 100 times and Istighfar 100 times is added with the supplications of aforementioned Hadith.

The third Kalimah is as below:

سُبْحَان اللهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ وَ لآ اِلهَ اِلّا اللّهُ وَ اللّهُ اَكْبَرُ وَلا حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّة ِ الَّا بِاللّهِ الْعَلِىّ الْعَظِيْم

“Glory be to Allah and all praise be to Allah, there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.”

It is also proven through the narrations of Hadith that the Messenger of Allah spent his entire duration of Wuqoof in invocations and remembrance of Allah. But no mention is made in Alhadith (plural of Hadith) as the fixation of all these invocations and remembrance Allah.

Therefore it is better to read all the invocation from “Al-Hizbul-Azam” (it is a comprehensive book of Masnoon invocations) by looking into the translation and understanding their meaning.

If someone is unable to do so then there is “Munajaat-e-Maqbool” which is shorter then the above book (this is also a collection of Masnoon invocations). One should read all the invocations of this hook with concentration and humiliation. Both of these hooks have been published in a pocket-size and are available. It is not difficult to keep these books with you.

And one should at least try to read those invocations which are written in “Al-Hisbul- Azam” for Arafat. For those who do not have both of these books of invocations, we will write down few selected supplications for them from those very same books, so at least they can read only these supplications repeatedly with understanding. Those supplications are as follows:         

O Allah, verily I have done much wrong upon myself and none Can forgive sins but you; so forgive me with your special forgiveness And have mercy on me. No doubt, you are Oft forgiving, all Merciful. O Allah, grant me forgiveness by which you may Improve my affairs in both worlds and turn unto Me with your approval to the repentance of mine Which I may never violate. Make me steadfast on the path of uprightness wherefrom I never go Astray. O Allah, turn me from the disgrace of Disobedience to the esteem of obedience.

Besides this, there is plenty of time and it is a golden opportunity. Therefore one should solicit Allah in one’s own language as well for himself, his family, his relatives, friends, and all the Muslims brothers. One should ask from Allah anything this is needed and also pray for the reformation and wellbeing of Ummah and the country because this is a special time for the acceptance of prayers.

A few rulings to follow to perform the activities of Arafat correct

1). What if a person gets out of the boundary of Arafat before sunset?

A person who gets out of the boundary of Arafat before sunset, he is bound to return and leave Arafat after sunset. Otherwise, he will fall under the obligation of a “Da’m” (sacrifice).

2). What is the timing condition of Wuqoof on the day of Arafat?

The time duration, that is, from mid-day of 9th Zul-Hijjah until the Dawn of 10th of Zul-Hijjah, is a condition for Wuqoof. The Wuqoof before or after this time duration will not stand to be correct.

3). What if a person gets a chance of Wuqoof in Arafat from Mid-Day until sunset?

If a person due to an excuse cannot have a chance of Wuqoof in Arafat on the 9th of Zul-Hijjah from mid-day until sunset, he is allowed to observe Wuqoof after sunset on the night of 10th Zul-Hijjah until dawn. The obligation will thus stand discharged even if that stay lasts only for a few minutes.

4). Is wearing Ihraam a condition for Wuqoof?

Wearing of Ihraam is another condition for Wuqoof.

5). Is getting purified from Menstruation period or Janabah, or period after birth necessary condition for Wuqoof?

The purification from menstruation period, or period after birth, or purification from Janabah is not a necessary condition for Wuqoof.

Proceeding from Arafat to Muzdalifah and the rulings therein

1). What is the place called Muzdalifah located?

Muzdalifah is situated within the boundaries of Haram at a distance of three miles towards the east from Mina.

2). When the Hajj pilgrims is required to reach Muzdalifah & when the requirements of Muzdalifah begins?

A Hajj pilgrim is required to reach Muzdalifah on the night of 10th of Zul-Hijjah after completing the Wuqoof in Arafat.

3). When and Where the Hajj pilgrims will offer Maghrib and Isha prayer?

The Hajj pilgrim has to offer Maghrib and Isha prayers together during the time of Isha prayer.

4). Can the Hajj pilgrims offer their Maghrib prayer in Arafat?

The name of Allah and Talbiya should be continuously recited throughout the way. On this night it is not permissible for the hajj Pilgrims to perform their Maghrib prayer in Arafat or on the way to Muzdalifah.

5). Is it Obligatory upon Hajj pilgrim to delay their Maghrib prayer while they hear Maghrib Azaan in Arafat?

It is Wajib (obligatory) upon them to delay their Maghrib prayer and offer it along with the Isha prayer by performing Isha prayer immediately after the Fardh of Maghrib prayer. One will be performing the Sunnah of Maghrib and Isha along with the Witr prayer afterward.

6). Do you know that Maghrib & Isha prayers both will be offered in Muzdalifah together with only one Azaan?

Maghrib and Isha prayers both will be performed in Muzdalifah together with one Adhan (call for prayer). It is Wajib (obligatory) to combine Maghrib and Isha prayers in Muzdalifah during the time of Isha prayer and a congregation is not a condition for its validity.

7). What if someone has already performed the Maghrib prayer in Arafat?

If someone had performed the Maghrib prayer on the way or in Arafat, it would become compulsory to repeat it after reaching Muzdalifah.

8). Can Maghrib prayer be offered if someone has reached Muzdalifah before the Isha prayer time?

If someone had reached Muzdalifah before the starting time of Isha prayer then one should not perform Maghrib yet instead, he should wait for the Isha time and then combine both prayers during the time of Isha.

9). Do you know the worship on the night of Muzdalifah contains a lot of Allah’s blessings?

It is Mustahab (desired) to stay away during the night of Muzdalifah and engaged in worship. According to the opinion of some (scholars) this night exceeds in virtue over Laialt-ul-Qader (night of power).

10). Do you know it is an emphasized Sunnah to spend a night between 9th & 10th of Zul-Hijjah in Muzdalifah?

It is an emphasized Sunnah to spend the night between the ninth and tenth of Zul-Hijjah in Muzdalifah and it is Wajib to make Wuqoof (stay) hereafter the dawn the detail of which is to follow.
