According to the experts, the activity of the Mahad Ad Dhahab mine and factory began 3000 years ago and this is the oldest gold mine that dates back to the time of Prophet Sulaiman (about 950 BC) from which gold was mined in different periods. However, gold is still mined from this mine.

During the reign of King Fahad bin Abdul-Aziz, the former ruler of Saudi Arabia, this mine was expanded. Around 5,989 million tons of crude minerals were extracted from 1983 to 2020, including 2.5 million ounces of pure gold and 9.8 million ounces of silver.
