Junaid Baghdadi, A Greatest wrestler who saw Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in his dreams twice

The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is the name that has the biggest prestige among the Muslims all over the world. They have extraordinary and special feelings and attachment to Him. Everyone loves, obey and wishes to meet Him once in his lifetime.

Only the pious, religious and exalted in faith are the lucky ones to have His visit in their dreams. Let us brief you about a wrestler who actually saw the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in his dreams twice. What leads this wrestler to have Him in a dream?

Who was the wrestler?

What did his teacher say about him?

Students learn from their teachers and try to excel in their fields. Quite a few students can surpass their teachers in Excellency and Junaid Baghdadi was one of them. One day a person asked Sari Saqti (a teacher of Junaid Baghdadi),

“Can the status of a pupil exceed his teacher’s?”

He replied:

“Yes and the evidence of that is Junaid Baghdadi as his status is greater than mine.”

Did Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) ask him to convey messages?

“I cannot give you advice while my teacher is alive.”

The very night Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came in his dream and said,

“O Junaid! Give good advice to people as Allah Almighty has made your speech the cause of guidance to people.”

Was Baghdadi status exceeded?

Junaid Baghdadi thought that his status has exceeded from his teacher. Confused around of the fellow pupils of Sari Saqti came to him telling about Saqti message,

“You did not give advice on the request of my pupils, declined the request of other spiritual leaders of Baghdad, and also abstained from advising my saying you to do so. But now that our Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has ordered you, you have to do it.”

How did Baghdadi’s teacher know the dream?

Junaid Baghdadi understood the hidden message and went to his teacher crying for forgiveness because of the thought he made in his mind. To which he said, 

“How did you know that I had the honor of meeting the Holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in my dream last night?”

To which his teacher Saqti replied:

“I have had the glorious honor of meeting Allah Almighty in my dream last night. He told me that He had sent his Beloved Prophet Muhammad  (صلى الله عليه وسلم)to Junaid to order him to advise people. This was done so that the people of Baghdad might be granted their wish.”

Was Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) proud of Junaid Baghdadi?

Junaid Baghdadi has an exalted status due to his modesty, virtue and blind love of Islam. Khazinat al-Asfiyah narrates in the Vol.1 Page 86 that an old man dreamt of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and Junaid Baghdadi was also seated in the Mehfil of the Prophet. He then saw that a person came and presented a query to the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“Hand it over to Junaid. He will write the answer.”

The person then said,

“Ya Rasoolallah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) May my parents be sacrificed at your feet. How can it be given to Junaid in your presence?”

The Prophet Muhammad  (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“Just as the Prophets are proud of their entire Ummah, I am proud of Junaid.”

What happened at the wrestling ring?

Since Junaid Baghdadi lived in Baghdad and earns his living through wrestling, it was one time as a part of the tradition to call a wrestler and any common man from the public had a right and chance to fight.

Once an aged man showed his willingness to fight at the ring. The people laughed and the ruler was shocked that how come an old man will fight at the ring. Read more: The Life of Imam Abu Hanifa

Was the old man wish turned down?

Since the rules about the wrestling tradition allowed anyone who wishes to fight, therefore, the old man wish could not be turned down. When Junaid Baghdadi came in-ring, he was shocked and amazed at how an old man who couldn’t stand properly and continuously shiver will fight with a wrestler.

What did the old man say in the wrestler’s ear?

Before the fight could start, the old man requested to talk to Junaid Baghdadi. The old man whispered in his ear that he is Syed (descendant of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم)) and is a very poor man.

He has debt with a huge amount and has nothing to eat for the family at home. If he could win the fight, he will be given the prize amount which will be sufficient to remove the loan and buy something to eat for his family for a long time.

What was the old man’s request?

The old man requested Junaid Baghdadi to put down his honor, fame, name and pride for the sake of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). He knew that losing from him means starting a long gossip about Baghdadi in the town. It could affect his honor and fame. But he requested on the name of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم).

How the fight did go?

Junaid Baghdadi knew the reward of losing in the court of Allah. He grabbed the opportunity quickly irrespective of his name and honor. He made several false moves which won’t hurt the old man and look genuine to the public and the ruler.

Then he allowed the old man to beat him and acted to get hurt from them. Eventually, he falls on the floor with the man lying on his chest showing victory.

What did Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) tell him?

The very night when Junaid Baghdadi slept he saw Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in his dream saying,

“You sacrificed your honor for my love. You forgave your fame which echoed around the city. Yet your sacrifice has let you earn the place among the Auliyas.
