Mode of transportation available in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Currently in Saudi Arabia, the modes of frequently used transportation are Taxi, Bus and recently established Train system. The Taxi and the Bus are quite old mode of transport available in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but the recently developed train system between Jeddah and Makkah and Madinah have become quite popular and the residents of the respective cities and specially those coming these Historical places from around the world on Hajj and Umrah are quite frequently using it to save time and related cost.
Saudi Arabia’s Transport Authority planning to fix rates for Taxi, Bus and Train
According to the announcement, the Transport Authority will only fix the fares for the followings routes:
- The fares for the Inter-city (from one city of Saudi Arabia to another city).

Why this Initiative is being taken?
This initiative of documenting the routes and their respective fares have been adopted by the authority as part of a move to restructure the public transport system in the country.

Will the Transportation fares be variable or fixed & do you know what are the conditions based on which it will be applied?
The followings are some of the conditions based on which the fares will be fixed for the Taxi, Bus and Train system:
|1||Rates applicable on Major, Medium & Small cities||The authorities said that the fixed rates would apply not only to major cities with a population exceeding one million but also to medium and small cities.|
|2||Rates for short distance & long distance||The authorities also said that a minimum rate would be fixed for short distance travel while the rates for long trips would be determined based on the distance traveled.|
|3||Rate Not to be less than 5% of daily average income||The Public Transportation Authority has proposed that the cost of daily commute should not exceed 5 percent of a family’s daily average income while it should not exceed 10 percent of income when traveling long distances in trips from small cities and suburban areas.|
How many types of Tickets will be introduced?
The Public Transport Authority said that it plans to introduce 3 types of tickets which are as follows:
- Single trip tickets
- Low cost season tickets.
- Family tickets.
How much fine will be imposed in case, if the passenger doesn’t comply with the specified fares?
A passenger will face a fine not exceeding 50 times the value of the ticket for not complying with the specified fares or traveling without tickets. The PTA has proposed that economy class tickets for public transport within big, medium and small cities for travel by train and bus should be brought down. Free of Charge OR Reduced fares of Transportation for Eligible classes
The following category of Passengers will be eligible for either free of charge travelling or 50% reduction in the fare prices:

Note! Other categories for concession can be introduced
Furthermore, the PTA added that the agency owning a public transport project has the right to reduce the fare further or add other eligible categories to benefit from reduced fares.
How many kinds of Taxi services will be introduced?
The PTA plans to fix SR.10 minimum fare for taxis. The PTA has confirmed that 4 different routes for the taxi service will be available. The routes and the venues are mentioned as below:
- There will be taxis for movement within cities.
- Taxis for movement between the cities.
- Taxis for movement for providing airport service.
- Taxi service at public transport stations and
- The Makkah taxi.
How the Taxi rate will be fixed and based on which conditions?
The authority said the fare structure would be fixed incorporating a number of basic elements. It must include the followings:
- A minimum starting fare.
- Fare per kilometer and
- The waiting charge per minute.
Will the Taxi fares be different for different timings in a day & at weekend?
The authority has specified that SR.10 as the minimum fare for taxis. The taxi fares will differ depending on the day of the week. There will be separate classes of fares for the Friday-Saturday weekend and for weekdays (between 6:00 a.m. and midnight)Kingdom again.
