Who is Arthur Brand?

Dutch art detective Arthur Brand – who is also known as “The Indiana Jones of the Art World”. He also won international acclaim in 2015 when he found Hitler’s Horses – Two Bronze Statues by Nazi sculptor Joseph Thorak.

Arthur Brand found a Picasso painting was stolen 20 years ago from a Saudi billionaire Sheikh Abdul Mohsen Abdul Malik’s yacht in 1999 as it was a quite expensive portrait which is approximately worth of $28 million. Read: Lithuanian man flies alone on huge plane to Italy


It is reported that the painting was circulated in the Dutch criminal underworld for years after it was stolen from the yacht. 

Everyone assumed it had been destroyed, that’s what happens with 90% of all stolen art, because it can’t be put on sale, Brand told Dutch newspaper but he resumed his search for the antique portrait and at last after four years he found it. Details of the Painting

  • This painting is known as a Buste de Femme (Dora Maar) OR Portrait of Dora Maar.
  • It was first painted in 1938 by Picasso.
  • Basically, Dora Maar was Pablo Picasso’s lover and inspiration for seven years.
  • Dora Maar was born in 1907, she was a famous photographer and artist in her own right.
  • She was in a relationship with Picasso for 7 years from 1936 to 1943. She died in 1997 at the age of 89.
  • The portrait (Dora Maar) which he made for her was hung in his home until his death in 1973.



How Did Arthur Brand Find it?

Mr. Brand’s began his search for the stolen portrait from 2015 after he heard that a “Picasso stolen from a ship”. In the beginning, he did not know exactly which work it was.  After the hard work and searching of four years, he finally came to know that the painting was Buste de Femme (Dora Maar).

France officials decided not to announce the owner of the painting and they gave the painting to an insurance company, which will decide what to do next with the expensive and antique portrait.
