Lifting on Ban on Women Drivers in Saudi Arabia

We all know that On 26 September 2017, King Salman issued a statement recognizing the right of Saudi women to drive in keeping with Sharia. Licenses were set to be issued to women starting on 24 June 2018.

The ban was lifted under a Royal Decision in the year 2017 and was announced that the women will start getting their car licenses from June 24, 2018, onwards. Many women said they will also apply for their licenses and the Saudi authorities actually issued thousands of licenses to women subsequent to the lifting of the Saudi ban.

Good News for Saudi expats women to get recruited as Driver!

Since Saudi Arabia has started issuing the driving license to the women, therefore, Saudi women have preferred more to recruit foreign women drivers (Saudi expats) for several good reasons.

According to the report, almost 459 foreign women drivers have been hired in 2019

Although Saudi women can now drive the car without any restriction still they prefer to recruit the Saudi expat women drivers to work for them.

One of the reasons for their recruitment is that the Saudi women are still in the process of learning the driving and secondly for sure, it will take quite a good time to be well versed with the road sense and the traffic rules and getting proficient.

Based on the recently published report by the General Authority for Statistics (GaStat), quite a good number of Saudi families have actually recruited the foreign women drivers (Saudi expats) as their car driver up till the end of the first quarter March 31, 2019. The foreign home drivers have increased in 2019 by 12.8% as compared to the year 2018

According to the report, by the end of March 2019, there were 1.54 million foreign home drivers compared to 1.36 million in 2018 with a rise of 12.8 percent.

Reasons for the Increasing trend in Recruiting the foreign homer drivers

  1. Women Drivers can perform Multitasking

It is viewed also that the Saudi families go for recruiting women drivers because they can do more than one job such as doing grocery, cleaning the house and ironing clothes.

  1. No Guarantee that the Saudi women getting a license will also drop her children to school every day

The instructors at women schools said even when a Saudi woman obtains a driving license, this is not a guarantee that she will drive her children to the school.

It is reported that many Saudi families are asking for Housemaids who can drive as well

They said this is not possible because the housemaids are recruited only to perform home chores not to drive cars.
