The Saudi Government authorities have relaxed the rules related to the ban on purchase of SUV having capacity of 7 passengers. Now expats can buy the SUV having the capacity of 7 passengers Saudi Arabia without any restriction or compulsion.


Was there any ban on Saudi expats for buying SUV?

In 2016, The relevant Ministry banned the purchase of SUV or 7 seater vehicle for Saudi expats who have less than 5 family members. Previously, it was opened for anyone who wishes to enjoy the luxury of the SUV.

Who Implemented the ban?

According to the Arab news, the General Directorate of traffic circulated the official order of stopping the registration of the 7 seater SUV in the name of Saudi expats having a family less than 5 members.


Why was the SUV banned for Saudi expats?

The Ministry banned the buying of SUV because people owning the 7 seaters started their own businesses. They use to give a pick and drop to the passengers in Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, Riyadh and other parts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to earn money.

Since this business was not registered officially so the Government didn’t receive any revenue. Considering this particular these particular reasons, the Government banned the purchase of SUV and it was only allowed subject to the provided conditions.


What was the consequence of the ban?

The ban resulted in the following loss of the people

  • The car dealers was unable to sell the SUV since the buyers had been reduced significantly due to the above-mentioned restriction.
  • The car owners cannot get a renewed car license on their name.
  • For instance if the Car owners have purchased the car before this ban and they did not have the required number of family members as mentioned above, then the car cannot be registered in their own name unless they satisfy the condition.



Why did people want to have an SUV?

The Saudi expats living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia wish to buy an SUV because it is very easy to buy since its not very expensive, the other reason is the cheap petrol prices in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia allow you to afford the SUV.

Has the ban lifted?

We have personally visited few show rooms to just observe whether the Car dealers are allowing the Saudi expats to purchase the SUV having capacity of 7 passengers.

The Car dealers are actually allowing the sale of SUV, however, the Banks are under the process of making the final financing policy for offering their customer to buy the SUV through a finance lease agreement. They said that the bank will soon allow the buyers as well.


How many cars can Saudi expat buy?

According to the rules and regulations of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, an expat can buy a total of 2 cars or vehicles of any choice on his name. However, any dependent person cannot buy a vehicle on his name.

  • Fill in the application form for a 7 seater SUV.
