The Construction of world’s highest suspended praying area completed

Makkah, the city of Saudi Arabia is the center of the Muslim Ummah. It has special association due to the presence of Holy Kaba’h known as the house of Allah Almighty and the history of the early times of Islam and the Caliphs and the Prophets who resided there. Every place has a notable fact attached and every area is precious for Muslim Ummah.

People from all over the globe try to visit the holy place once in their lifetime. With the rapid increase of Muslims around the globe and the number of pilgrims every year, the holy mosque gets small to host all the pilgrims. Even though constructions are continued to increase the area of the Mosque yet the location fails to accommodate Muslims, especially on special occasions.

Keeping in view this given fact, a suspended prayer area is constructed. What is it about? How it is made? All the questions will be discussed in the article below.

All you need to know about the suspended prayer area

The suspended prayer area is constructed between the 161 meters high twin towers overlooking the Holy Kaba’h in the east and King Abdul Aziz parallel road from the west. The total weight of the prayer area is 400 ton and the total square area it holds is 400 sq. meters.

50% of the total constructed area is allocated for prayer, whereas the rest is for services. The allocated area can accommodate approximately 200 worshipers.  A certain part of the area is movable to and from one of the two towers. As to the other part, it is almost fixed, except for being movable up to 20 cm.

The construction of the suspended prayer area

According to Makkah daily, on Saturday the execution work on the project began in October by the Jabal Omar Development Company for installing the world’s highest suspended prayer area. It was constructed using a mobile lift and 4 other computer-operated forklifts and will soon be open for congregational prayers (Salat al-jama’ah).

The pre-study on the construction of suspended prayer area

Speaking to Al-Arabiya, the consultant who made the designs, the company that constructed the prayer area and Chairman of the Real Estate Committee in Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) said that,

“The suspension bridge underwent long studies to determine if it was capable of withstanding the climatic and natural phenomena.”

Why the suspended area was made of Iron and not concrete?

Explaining to media about the construction of the suspended area by iron, the officials said,

“The studies took several years to carry out & actually followed by a careful revision and checking to ensure that it can withstand the impacts of wind action, temperature changes, earthquakes and the difference in the settlement rates of the substrata and soil under loads of the two towers, on the towers themselves, which are linked by the suspension bridge.”

“Hence, it was decided that an iron structural framework would be the most suitable because it is lighter in weight and is more flexible at this height.”
