What is the new buzz of town?

Social media is filled with pictures of a light bulb with the caption that it is the light bulb used in the Prophet’s mosque in Madinah in 1325H approximately 100 years back in past.

Is it a rumour or real fact?

People are amazed by the news circulating in social media. The researchers spent their due time and concluded from the information inscribed on the bulb that it is some 111 years ago as almost the same time when electricity entered Arabian Peninsula. What do historians talk about it?

According to the historic data stored in Madinah Municipality website, the electricity was introduced by Sultan Abdul Majid and the first electric bulb was lit inside the Mosque of Madinah for the first time in Shaban 25, 1326H or 22nd September 1908. Who was Sultan Abdul Majid?

When were the power stations built?

Who lit lamps for the first time in the mosque?

According to The Holy Mosque of Madinah, written by Mohammad Al-Sayyid Al-Wakeel, the mosque was originally lit by palm fronds.

According to Abu Nuaim narration referring to Abu Hurairah who said that the one who first lit a lamp in the mosque was Tameem Al-Dari. Which technology is in use in Prophet’s Mosque?

According to some historians, the one who first lit lamps in the mosque was Caliph Omar bin Al-Khattab when people gathered there for Taraweeh prayer. The lamps were then lit by oil and the technology is still in use by the Saudi government in Madinah.
